This classic record review is Reign in Blood by Slayer. A reason I like this album is because it isn't one of those albums where you have to trot through 20 minute instrumentals with the same riff through the whole record. It is a fast paced guitar solo-filled speed album. Using this style they get through 20 minutes of awesome material in 4 minutes. Although at times it is just so fast and complicated you can't follow it. But besides that, it is a great album. The sound of it is so chaotic, that it just stuns you a makes you say, "I like this. I want to hear more!" Their music makes me think of a boat on rough seas, and that boat has me on it. The reason I say that, is the riffs give you a sort of up and down feeling. If you think about it too much you might get nauseous. Even with that, it it is still a 4 star record. Some words I found in every songs lyrics were "flesh," "death," and "blood" which makes me think their songs are about somebody ripping apart somebody's flesh and blood to death. Lastly the cover art, it reminds me of both a Picasso painting and a wood carving of people worshipping a goat. With that weird cover art and awesome solos and vocals Reign in Blood is a great record that I hope you all own.
i love this record almost as much as i love this review. i just wish i knew about it when i was 9!
ReplyDeleteIronically I first heard this album in early winter of 1987 at age 9, along with Anthrax's Spreading the Disease and Megadeth's Peace Sells. I think i would have said the same thing, it's like a boat on a sea of blood...
ReplyDeleteI agree that 20 minutes of guitar wanking is excessive and ridiculous. A band that can get it done in 4 is alright in my book.
ReplyDeleteThis photo of you Ezra, makes me happy!
ReplyDeleteEzra you're awesome. Keep writing!
ReplyDeleteAnd I do own this album, sir. Thanks for the great review!
ReplyDeletelike Nick, I first heard this album when I was 8 or 9, and it blew me away - although, I don't think I could have written so fine a review.
ReplyDeletegood work, Ezra - keep it grim!
:)))
Nice on bro!
ReplyDeletesadly i got into metal late in my teens, when I was 15 or so, when i first heard reign in blood it scared the shit out of me,, i was like wow wtf is this, I promised myself to never hear it again,, but something made me listen it again and again and again,,Ive loved slayer and metal since then, I wish i was like u when I was 9,, what I fine review of a metal classic, keep em coming Ezra and stay Metal
ReplyDeleteripping someones flesh and bones apart to death is a great way to look at it
ReplyDelete"My favorite band is Iron Maiden and I hate Reagan, and hippies, and Jesus."
ReplyDeletebrilliant.
Well done kiddo - well done. The ship analogy is perfect. Now, if you've not already done so, check out Hell Awaits by Slayer. It is a slower paced, but no less devastatingly heavy album.
ReplyDeleteThis record Peace Sells and Ride The Lightning got me into heavier music way back in the day. I have actually owned this release in all formats, LP, tape, cd, and mp3. Great review of a great album.
ReplyDeletei think slayer might have been the loudest band i've ever heard. i also like that while they play big arenas that they also play smaller clubs too. there's a lot to be said for that...

hahah!!! Love this review. I probably first got this when I was 13-14. Loved every desperate screaming ear-drum shredding minute of it. The album scared the crap out of my mum when she saw it, which still makes me giggle even while I don't listen to this album much any more. Hope it is a step along the way to many more musical intrigues for you lad!!
